I have developed a collection of FEL TEMP REPARATIO coins and the Hut type is fairly well represented in this collection. I thought it worth sharing some of my Lugdunum huts as a bit of an excuse to share a new one.

I have at least one from each mint under Constans but am a few mints short under Constantius II. I am still missing a Lugdunum for Constantius II. I now have three examples for Constans though.

Here are my first two. They are both the same type and I have two due to a lack of ability to mentally keep track of all my coins and bought the second having forgotten I already had one.

Constans - AE2

Obv:- D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG, Rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust left, globe in right hand
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPAR-ATIO, Helmeted soldier, spear in left hand, advancing right, head left; with his right hand he leads a small bare-headed figure from a hut beneath a tree. The spear points up and to the right
Minted in Lugdunum, (// *PLG), A.D. 348-350
Reference:- RIC VIII Lugdunum 87 (R)

Firstly - Ex collection of Count Gaston de Lambertye formed in the 18th century

Lugdunum-Huts-Fel-Temp-Reparatio

Secondly

Lugdunum-Huts-Fel-Temp-Reparatio

Now my newset example from aslightly earlier issue. My excuse for buying (as if I need one) that it is a different issue, a different diadem type on the bust and also a different tree type (yes the tree types vary with this type) and this tree type at Lugdunum is much scarcer.

Constans - AE2

Obv:- D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust left, globe in right hand
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPAR-ATIO, Helmeted soldier, spear in left hand, advancing right, head left; with his right hand he leads a small bare-headed figure from a hut beneath a tree. The spear points up and to the right
Minted in Lugdunum, (// PLG), A.D. 348-350
Reference:- RIC VIII Lugdunum 84 (S)

Anyone else have any Lugdunum huts? Or even huts in general?

Excellent coins, out of all the Fel Temp coins that I have come across and had in my collection I have not even had one of the Hut issues. I know they are not as plentiful as the Fallen Horseman series, but they are no rare either.

It's nice to see this excellent group from that series. Thanks for sharing.

Martin, this design element of a hut with a barbarian being led out is fascinating. I just read up on them as I hadn't seen this type of reverse before and just as you state, different mints used different leaves on the tree above the hut. Your examples show this diagnostic clearly. Thanks for sharing!

It's a nice one. I make yours RIC VIII Heraclea 71. I also have a 71. Mine comes from an unlisted officina.

Thanks for the clarification Martin, I do get confused.
The captive on your 71 has some awesome leggings, reminds me of an early eighties fashion victim.
Totally different style on that 1, lovely coin

Mine is from Constantinpolis , first officina : CONSA
20 mm , 4.21 gr ,12 h
RicVIII,86 , third group , struck 348-351
The writing REP / ARATIO is not mentioned in RIC . The spearpoint is down and the spear nearly vertically before the body . Does anybody recognise the leaves ? Maybe the leaves are connected with the region ?albert

Very nice. The style is great. The detail, all the way down to the bootsis great. The unusual legend adds to the interest.

I have a couple of RIC VIII Constantinople 88s

Lugdunum-Huts-Fel-Temp-Reparatio

Lugdunum-Huts-Fel-Temp-Reparatio

And a RIC VIII Constantinople 92

Super coins Martin and Albert ..lovely detail!
I wanted to ask a question...

The celators of old.....As you know, some mints/coins/officinas, produced far higher quality coins than others..more detail and a higher degree of artwork.Did each emperor have a preferred celator and were these people held in a higher esteem? Are there any records of this? Just interested..

Unfortunately we don't have any records. In my opinion some of the finest coinage in terms of style at this time was being produced by Antioch.

Wow Martin ..really nice!

Do you have a photo gallery of your coins anywhere as I'd love to see it?

Both mints for me had something a bit special the scarcer Constantius II from Alexandria is lovely!Almost futuristic! whereas the Antioch coins have much softer design...Interestingly the nose of the emperor has a completely different shape...

I do have a gallery over on Forvm. It contains everything and thus is quite large. I have tried to structure it with some sub folders.
