*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***
I've been going through some Wheat pennies and noticed the D mint mark is distinctly different on one of the 1954 coins. The D on the coin (on the left hand side of the picture) is further from the 9 and more underneath the 5. Does this variation make the coin more valuable?
Mint marks can vary in depth, width, Be affected by strike/machine doubling, height, Damaged by contact damage, be polished down, Be affected with a damaged punch, show die wear and be affected by die flow. Being punched in by hand the locations can vary. So a lot of different factors can affect mint mark punch even with the same punch style.
