I'm wondering if you have a list in your head (or on paper in front of your pennies) of what years contain errors/varieties that you are looking for. I also search pennies, and save all of the pre-82s to look through later. I will check these for the 60 and 70 large and small dates, and the 72 double die. For the post-82s, I only set aside the 98, 99, and 00 to check for the ' Wide AM' variety. I know that there are others to look for (83, 84, 92, and perhaps others). But I figure the odds of finding one are slim, and I might overload my brain trying to keep up with all of them. I found an Indian Head penny in the first $50 I sorted, and a 1998 Wide AM in the first $100 or so. Haven't found any since then. WheatieFan

This has inspired me to keep a log on boxes of cents and what they behold. So far, the first box on the list upped me 36 cents as I got 4 dimes out it.

I too am going through pennies, mostly for the copper. I typically go through bank boxes and find about 10 coppers per roll and about 20 wheats per box. The last bank box I got had just a few coppers per roll and hardly any wheats.
Since then I switched to customer wrapped rolls and am having much better luck. I even found a steel penny...my third this year. Is anyone else noticing a decreasing number of copper pennies?

I cant really afford to take all the copper cents out that would be half of each box. I only take the red coppers out. 7 wheats (1945 being oldest) (350 rolls) Wheat cents: 124 1920-1929: 1 1930-1939: 6 1940-1958: 117 Wide AM: 1 (1998) 1992 struck through (grease) 1988 RDV: 2 Counterstamped: 1 Canada: 1939 and 1945. 1964 Belgium 50 centimes 300 to look through for errors yet.

I have an estimated 55,000 Lincoln Cents.
I've never really thought about looking through them.
Guess it's something our kids or grandkids can do someday.
