Coincollecting have its renessaince here in Europe after introducing the Euro coinage. Many of young guys collects especially special 2€ coins and old currencies have increased in their value too.

I really don't disagree with what everyone else has said here. But frankly, the last time I went to a coin show, I noted that I was one of about 3 people there who was under 40 years in ago. In fact, I was just one of a handful who didn't have gray hair. Though the numbers of coin collectors may be rising, it seems that most of these collectors are all older people.

In Florida everyone is old. But Ive been to a few shows of different sizes, and it seems most of the crowd is middle aged with a few seniors and kids in the mix. -PP

Pennypusher- true that on occasion there are kids in the mix, but half of the time they are just their because their grandfather goaded them into being there. Honestly, at that last show I went to, the few kids there kept going on about how boring it was and how they wanted to leave.

I am not sure how much of it all sticks when you are a kid. I remember my grandfather started me coin collecting. I liked the hobby but I liked the ice cream man more. To think that I opened proof and mint sets for change to use at the ice cream truck and paid with Buffalo nickels. Anyways, coming back to the hobby, I know better.

Steamwalker- well my grandfather got me into it too. The funny thing is that after that I got my other grandfather into it. I just seems that one has to be of a certain age in order to appreciate it.

Quote: they are just their because their grandfather goaded them into being there I would love to have just one more chance to go coin-hunting with my grandfather. He was not a coin collector (more into antique electronics), so we spent a lot of time at flea markets and antique malls. But he did a lot to help me. He was the one that got me to move from folders to Dansco albums and actually bought me the Ike and Kennedy albums I still have. When I went to FUN '08 in Orlando I saw only a few kids. And I was probably the only kid interested in coins there. -PP

I think it appeals more to people who have an interest in history. That rarely includes kids and usually includes older folks.

There ya go!
I've certainly gathered an interest in history and genealogy in my later years, and I am still only in my late twenties. Coin collecting generally requires an interest in history to understand the significance of an 80-year quarter.

I guess we are all saying that ultimately the community of numismatists grows based on the numbers of people who have a great interest in history and can appreciate the significance of coins.

Does anyone have statistics on the national coin collector headcount?
