Hi All I have just got this piece of wire money and am totally baffled by it. I have had a look around online and think it maybe from the rule of Peter the Great, but have no idea on date. I believe from what I have read, although I maybe wrong, that there should be date letters on the coin somewhere, or does mine not have those parts stamped in. Anyway any help would be fully appreciated. Regards Brian

Yes, Peter the Great, yes, the date is well off flan, if it was there in the first place.
I might try to look for a more specific attribution later.

Thank you january1may, appreciate you taking the time to get back to me and confirm my initial findings. As a new collector of Ancient and older coinage, I previously only collected from 1860 -1970, any help or advice is definitely gratefully accepted.

The middle line of script on your coin is Peter's name in Cyrillic: ΠETP(b). The arms of the T hang down, making it look like a square letter M. The last letter, which looks something like a lower-case "b", is off flan.

Thanks Kushanshah, totally appreciate the sharing of knowledge. I think they are a lovely set of coins and really interesting. I am leaning toward this being a coin from possibly 1701. It seems to have many of the characteristics that I have seen attributed to the coins of that specific date. My only concern is that the bottom of the Lance is not just spiked but has cross towards the tip. Would anyone no if there are variants in designs in this time period. Thanks all for all the information so far. Its great learning from fellow enthusiasts.

I have four or five reference books for Russian wire money but none of them seem to cover Peter, only earlier reigns. I also have the Bitkin catalog which covers Peter's standard issues but I don't see listings for his wire money.

It's a convenient way to look for coins of Peter the Great. His coins tend to have at least part of that name, and none of the other reigns have anything similar.
