Thank you GrapeCollects, Levelsofmadnes, and Coinfrog! Definitely a pleasure to see this thread serve its purpose for learning. GrapeCollects, that was a severe example of Die Deterioration! I'll add one more example of severe Die Deterioration to this thread.

1982 LMC with severe Die Deterioration, the worst I've seen personally. http://goccf.com/t/322204&whichpage=2#2746987

GrapeCollects, it will probably be a challenge to figure out the mintmark, do to normal circulation wear and tear and severe Die Deterioration.

Thank you sir for your help. Sometimes we just want to hear it is a RPM vs MD, pride and determination and want a special coin/find. I think I may send my coin in for grading due to other devises not MD however.

Seeker15987, first, I wouldn't send it off for grading until you post pictures of your coin in a new topic.

Great educational post!

How would we determine coin wear if they were struck with dies which were not worn out. What stages of wear a does coin undergo in circulation when they have been struck with unworn dies?

Coin wear often shows on the devices that face the rims area. This die wear is a aging process. When you study coins coin you will start to see how as the die ages the distortion shows on the outer edges of devices:

Note the notations on the images.
Also when the die wear gets real bad then you see sever distortion of the devices:

Kind of Gruesome. But these are just die issue, not even figuring in coin wear.
