The Classic is a beast. Black and /or corroded and mostly unlovable in a higher grade set. Every time I find one I like (Heritage has one now that's a beauty) I have a hard time justifying the price considering what else you can get for the money. And even at $3000-4000 it won't be perfect, just nice.

I've got a couple fine and vg which may be all I ever own.

I'd much rather have a beautiful Seated dollar, or a scarce date $3, or any number of other types.

So I might have to bid a few more times before I ever win one I like.

I paid 25 bucks for the one in my 7070 and while it's not a high grade example, I like it well enough that I don't see an upgrade in my future short of winning the lottery - in which case I'd probably just start a second 7070...

It is a very difficult coin to find in higher grades without corrosion or other problems.

I feel your pain. I've had several pass through my hands over the last few years that came with lots/collections I bought. Haven't been happy enough with any of them to keep one. I recently bought a lot of 60+ large cents (almost no duplicate dates) in an album that had PVC. I knew they were rough and paid accordingly but had high hopes for the 1814. After an acetone bath a good bit of the mean green came to light. I'm hoping a soak in verdicare will improve it enough to be acceptable. Will try to post some pictures when I have a little more time.

Mine is a lower grade, but I'm quite fond of it because of the even surfaces and the lack of corrosion. It was a gift from my coin club a few years ago and I can't see myself ever selling it. PCGS graded it G-6

I pretty much like what I have in my 7070 now, until I find some other one that will spark my interest.

But that will probably cost 3x as much or more!

I actually saw that one and was interested, but then I saw the note in the description:

Here's pictures of the one from the lot I recently bought. The lot was in an old album with PVC pages. All the coins were affected by that. Most had been cleaned & many had some sort of dark waxy build up. This particular coin looked like it had good detail. An acetone bath took away the dark waxy buildup and revealed a lot of corrosion. Hoping verdicare will help but believe this will be one of many that doesn't make the cut.

I encourage all to break one out of the graded slab and put it in your 7070. You don't have to buy it raw! Now, from the examples you can tell this type was one work horse coin like our GW quarters today-everywhere.

I've got an 1812 in my slot. Nice low grade AG/G with chocolate brown surfaces and no planchet problems or corrosion. Pretty happy with it.

That one could definitely be a contender.

I was just happy to get a smooth example regardless of grade. But I had to pay a premium for it, as I recall. Here's a pic before I broke it out of its slab.

This is my raw 1814 Plain 4, the nicest of my raw Classics.

It only grades VG or so and it's a late die strike but it has great color and a relatively problem-free planchet. I have it an in envelope, not an album, but if I ever did a 7070 it would fit right in.

This 1813 was raw, but I recently had it slabbed. My EAC grade was 25/10; PCGS said VF Details/Env. Damage. It looks better in hand, but it might be too rough for an album slot.

Before PCGS slabbed it.
