OK, I'm going to take a break from this thread (since there a few more going along the same lines). I will make some more modified coins, and revive this in July, IF there is interest in more....?

Good eye Spruett!

I admit I had a leg up on this one. It took just a second to find.

I have been TRYING to take decent pics lately of an incredible 1946 DDR I added not too long ago. None came out.

One of the main markers, hence prominent in the viewfinder for some time while trying to get the lighting correct, was the line by the left leg.

nss-52, Thank You! I've really enjoyed this contest for fun! I'll be looking forward to more in July

Earle42, I've been having the same problem with getting pictures that I'm satisfied with! Maybe 2 out of 100 are acceptable. What are you using to take the pic's? I purchased a Celestron 5mp microscope. It's a great scope, I just cannot seem to get the lighting right!

@Tootallious - for macro pics, my system its based on this genius post by Darth Morgan post - which really works well as can be seen by the pics (earlier in the thread and even the first page backwards).
http://goccf.com/t/160092&whichpage=11#2396505

I do not have Janscos which I am seeing the advantage of as their heads are very small. I am using LED desk lamps from Walmart that were 5.00 each.

Here are pics of the crude version I started with for macro pics:
http://goccf.com/t/243488

As can be seen it can take some amazingly close up pics - cost 1.00 for the (now cannibalized) laser pointer.

I have built a crude /prototype platform and focusing mechanism for the laser pointer lens. My main problem is what looks like it is in focus on the iPhone screen sometimes is out of focus when the pic is uploaded to a desktop. I also need to play with the lighting more.

The iPhone lays in the sled which centers the phone's camera lens over a 1.00 laser pointer lens. The coin is laid on a strip of paper and slid under the laser pointer lens. The paper strip makes it easy to position and move the coin by tiny amounts. The knob is rotated to raise and lower the sled for focus.

There are a few other problems I am still wanting to resolve.

I enjoy building things!

I also am not happy with the focusing mechanism and am planning on making it more stable with multiple contact points on the sled.

Note from that last link what the incredibly inexpensive micro is capable of. It just took some fooling around to find the height to sit it at. And actually, I have just been using whatever is at hand at the time to find the right level!

At present I am wondering whether or not I scratched the laser pointer lens or not as the pics have been coming out cloudy.

Thanks for this info. I use a Mac and run Windows (when needed) in a, well, window. I am just wondering if this program is more intuitive than Photoshop, The Gimp etc.

No more or less intuitive, in my opinion. I have used it (PDN) for many years, so I am familiar with it. Before that, I used Photoshop and Photoshop Elements for even longer.

@Earle42, thank you for the information! I have seen similar setups and they all appear to work rather well. Unfortunately I do not have an IPhone and my IPad is older than my grandchildren and takes horrible pictures. The advice that I have been given is to purchase some small led clip on lights which I still need to do. One I buy those ill be able to have a little more control of lighting.

@nss - this has really been fun
Yes - definitely interested in your reviving it.

Mine too. I found the iPhone 4s is the earliest model for good pics and found no need for a newer model when I tried them for this type of picture taking.

If you find good clip sons, let me know. The generic 1.00 ones are just not powerful enough.

Someone else on the forum showed pics of using a yogurt cup as a diffuser by cutting out the bottom, laying the coin down, inverting the cup sans bottom over it, and shooting the coin from above. I did this with a proof coin the other day and came up with good results.

I will PM so I am not hijacking this thread.

Surprise, I decided to do another one.

Please, just one correctly identified change per person per coin.
I made seven (7) changes. One or two might be hard to find...
