I find the "special wrap" offering from the mint to be the most misleading value proposition they have. These rolls are sold for up to 2x face value but they are simply business strikes in a fancy preprinted wrap. When the roll of nickels are sold for $4 ($2 face) you know it can only cost $2 maximum for the tooling to prepare and wrap the roll. So a roll of $2 coins sold for $80 ($50 face) means a $28 killing is being made. Oh and as @Cdncoins noted... if coins are sold for more than face value, they are assumed to be collectible and trigger taxable status thereby increasing the cost base even further. I understand given the face value debacle where folks buy face value with Credit Cards and return via a bank at face value thereby benefiting from the credit card points for no out of pocket cost but it seems to me that either a 10% premium or the option to buy at face using wire transfer/interac payment only, as most bullion dealers offer, would negate that type of scam. Should any of the "special wrap" become torn or damaged, you now have a collection of UNC business strikes that in the case of these $2 coins are worth approx $2 each. Maybe if you are running your own LCS or have a regular booth at a coin meet or flea-market, you can charge a premium in a direct sale but for most it is losing proposition as it is unlikely that you can recover the auction seller premium for contemporary UNCs and like most NCLT, these wraps generally don't appreciate over time (or at least, I have never seen them appreciate). If I don't trust in the ability to collect from the wild, I would rather go to a LCS and spend $4 each for the two releases in UNC than drop $100 (after tax) for 25. That satiates my collection completeness OCD and manages my cost. For the record, I categorize myself as a collector not an investor or flipper. It just seems odd to me that as a coin collector, the goal for this product is not to collect coins but a piece of paper wrapping the coins since that is what is being sold here... the coins in the roll will always be worth $50. It is the paper wrapper that is valued at $30... at least for now and it is a piece of paper that, if it remains intact, separates you from seeing 23 of your 25 coins and for the 2 you can see, you only get to see one side each.

Why is a roll of 1991 25 cents routinely auction for around 500 bucks or more with a 450,000 mintage, the non colour version of this toonie is going to be one of the lowest mintage ever, there is no way to get these rolls unless you have some special access to the main money delivery services and you are not going to pay face for them. Although in general a special wrapper is not worth 30 bucks, in this case it's probably the only way for the majority of the public to gain a roll. These will have roughly the same mintages of the 2012 pre-security loonies and toonies and how easy are they to find in the wild ?

Shipping confirmation received today from the Mint... via Purolator. Guess they aren't taking a chance with CP set to strike. Shipping is free over $100. The set alone also ships free. The set and a roll comes to about $115 in ON w/ free shipping which isn't cheap but my time is worth something and running around town trying to find a bank with them, or going to a coin exchange, cost something. Paying $90 to hoard a roll and $25 for an uncirculated set with both toonies displayed is ok, I guess. Would I rather the Mint sold them at FV or close too it? Sure. Would be even better if they handed them out free. The Mint has repeatedly said the mix is 2M colour and 1M non-colour. Finding them in change is a pipe dream. How many 2017 toonies have you found in change? For me, it's zero. Slightly better odds than lotto max.

@john100 I take your point about scarcity and availability in the wild. Here off the left coast, I have had around a dozen of the "Wait for me, Daddy" and "Sir John A' in change but no "HMS Shannon" or "Boreal Forest" twoonies and each of these had 5M mintage. I guess my reaction was based on the 2017 special coin wrap sets where for $368 (+ tax and shipping) (or 2x face) you can have a roll of each of the coins in 2017 classic and my Canada liveries. I am not sure what the mintage of these were but they claimed 10,000 sets. To date, I see no appreciation in value and even the ability to purchase at a discount from certain vendors. That is also supported by a number of the other special wrap issues. It just smacks of another attempt by a cynical RCM to repackage for unwarranted profit. It seems that any appreciation in value is based on the availability of the coin (a collecting fundamental) and not the fact that it is in a special wrap though as you say... it may be that you can only reliably get these through the special wrap set. I stand corrected as I didn't take mintage into account.

Previous to 2017, the RCM in Winnipeg had a bulk order dept. where any one or dealer can purchase circulating coins at face plus shipping and one time shipping charge, according to the higher RCM personal at the 2017 RCNA they did this to stop Canada 150 hoarding, how did that work out, only rolls of the toonie was in dealers hands and I concluded it must have been pulled by the security delivery firms and sold to dealers. So instead of celebrating our 150 most of these coins found it's way into dealers stock, just like these toonies because there is no way for regular collectors to order from the RCM and it's limited mintage this will be almost the only way to get it. As mentioned above with the GITD toonie went to many TD in the Toronto area only one had a box and the rest only had a few from customer's change, and these had a higher mintage. Yes those special wrap 50 cent pieces and others rarely appreciates but this coin is a little different due to reasons above

Quote: As mentioned above with the GITD toonie went to many TD in the Toronto area only one had a box and the rest only had a few from customer's change, and these had a higher mintage Absolutely not true. I walked into many branches at the right time of three different banks and was able to get a roll. The thing with the GITD was that the packaging was paper even for the new coins. Most people were caught off guard with this because everyone is used to new coins in the shrink wrap type of wrapper. People did eventually get to it. I would not be surprised if RCM is packaging these for circulation in the some different way. In any case here is how the numbers work out - 3,000,000 total minted. Lets say out of that approximately 300,000 are for specially wrapped rolls and card so that leaves 2,700,000. 2,700,000 toonies = 108,000 rolls. Method 1 of deployment by RCM is to mix each of these rolls with regular rolls of toonies in boxes of 20. Method 2 of deployment by RCM is to have the standard box of 20 with these new toonies. In that case there would be 108,000 rolls divided by 50 = 5400 boxes. I would suspect that they would be randomly delivering these boxes to different banks through the regular recyclers. 5400 boxes of 20 rolls is not a lot of boxes to go to each branch in Canada. Method 1 will ensure very little pilfering by middle people because they would not know. This will allow a better opportunity for public at large to find these coins in circulation. I think RCM is listening and trying differnt ways to have these circulation coins reach out to lay public making collecting what it should be - a bit of suspense and a bit of fun. For those like us who just want to boost our collection without the fun we can always buy it from LCS or from local coin exchange or through the mint offering.

Now that these have hit ebay, the non coloured coin, with half the mintage of the coloured ones, are way cheaper. Seems backwards. Are we that hooked on colour? I like the flower better on the non coloured one anyways. No bumps to hold the ink. Best buy I have seen so far is $7.95 for one of each plus shipping. May have to wait on the mail strike.

The RCM will be conducting a number of coin exchanges across the country beginning November 1. Most notable are the ones featuring the designer who presumably will also be autographing special cards but that has not been confirmed. Only two per person. A YouTube video of the RCM commercial is also available online. Interesting that CAC in Kitchener has been chosen as one of the locations which should appeal to anyone within a short drive of the GTA or even London. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the link below for locations. https://www.mint.ca/store/dyn/armis...15-10-2018_e

Quote: Unless you work or live near one of the exchanges would anyone travel for 2 coins ? It would financially not make any sense for me to spend any more on gas than the premium I would otherwise pay on getting these coins at the coin show or from a LCS. At today's gas prices it would be about say $10 or so for two coins or approximately 9 litres worth of gas which in my car would be approximately 108 kilometers return or 54 kilometers one way. Of course if I add dollar value to my time then $10 can be made in less than an hour after tax with the minimum wage that our Ontario government has most recently decided to cap at $14. I would travel to enjoy being part of the coin exchange, to be part of the excitement and to also meet up with the designer. That is the fun of collecting, building memories -Priceless.

not a chance.. and I am calling all the banks, and no one has seen any of them yet.. so is this going to be the colored 2107 toonie, all over again, with the brinks drivers, swapping out the rolls. (only heard this from a source), not known for fact, but due to the high volume of sealed boxs on ebay I would tend to believe my source..

No Toronto locations in the coin exchange. That's unfortunate. I'll probably have to pick them up from a dealer as I'm not putting high odds on finding both in change or roll hunting.
