1848 A2/G102/F102 This is the first pairing of Obverse 2 (the date has shifted and the 18(4)8 touches the base of the rock) and Reverse B. Reverse B is significant because Reverse A had actually been a leftover from 1847 and was paired with Obverse 1 in 1848 until it cracked. So this is the first instance of the "first 1848 Reverse". Here's an 1848 dime that was counterstamped by J.M. Freeman. Joseph Mosely Freeman was a silversmith, watchmaker and jeweler in Norfolk, Virginia. This coin was most likely stamped during the 1850's. The counterstamps of southern merchants are generally quite rare, and this is the only one as yet reported for Freeman. Here's another of Freeman's retail counterstamps on the underside of a silver teaspoon ... Here's Mr. Freeman's portrait ... It's not often that one can put a face with a counterstamp!

That's the first time I have ever seen the person who counter stamped the coin. Awesome. 1849 F-102 PCGS EF40 The Big Easy
