Off to a nice start already! Canton of Lucerne/Luzern, 1 schilling 1647 KM-25. The reverse bears an image of St. Leodegar. Leodegar was the politically active bishop of Autun (Burgundy) in the 7th century. When his enemy, prince Ebroin of Neustria succeeded in briefly gaining authority over Burgundy in the mid-670s, he first had Leodegar tortured by having his eyes put out, and a short time later executed by beheading. Leodegar was canonized as a martyr saint within a few of decades of his death. A monastery dedicated to him was founded in central Switzerland around 750, and the area that grew up around it became known as Luciaria. The city of Lucerne was chartered around 1178. Leodegar holds the traditional bishop's crozier (staff) in his left hand, and a crutch/cane as used by the blind in his right.   |

And, it was all the way back on page 222 of the thread (1714) we saw our first Louis XIV coin! Quite a run, with a few years still to go, I think. Great Austrian coin too. Good year! |
