almost forgot to post my first coins of a great couple (more will follow during the next 3 weeks); they almost look "cool" together on the coins of those days Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain, "Infanta" of Philip II, and Albert VII of Austria, Archduke of Austria, rulers of the Spanish Netherlands from 1598-1621 1619 Ducaton and 1619 Half Ducaton, both minted in Antwerp   Albert and Isabella were talented rulers and greatly loved by the people of the Spanish Netherlands. Their 23 year reign brought back prosperity and even peace to a region that was utterly devastated and degraded by an ugly period of 40 years of war (when we walk back in time we'll see the details). A 12 year truce (1609-1621) was made between the Spanish Netherlands and the Northern Provinces (the Dutch Republic, also ruled by talented people like Johan van Oldenbarneveld). The costly machinery of warfare could be put aside (for some time). It was time for restoring a battered society. As this happened, the fertile soil came back for science and arts. Beautiful coins and nice accompanying history. It sounds like their reign was the direct opposite of the incessant wars between Poland and Sweden on the other end of the trade route you've mentioned. I will continue the parade of Sigismund portraits with this trojak (3 groschen), Krakow mint   |

nice coin, tdziemia an obvious similarity with the two Antwerp silver coins is the lace collar worn by the Archdukes and by Sigismund; clearly this was fashion for the upper class of the 17th century it would not surprise me if the collar worn by Sigismund was produced in the Spanish Netherlands: see https://www.britannica.com/art/Brussels-lacetoday around the Grand Place in Brussels, many lace shops sell traditional hand made pieces we also understand better the origin of the word necklace |

1619 Charles V, Holy Roman EmperorCarolusCity of Besançon (France)  Charles V transferred the right of coinage from the clergy to the city of Besançon in 1534. On one side of the coins was to be his image and on the other side the arms of the city. Although Charles died in 1558, his instructions were carried out throughout the entire period of coinage from 1537 to 1673.
