That's a great looking loon Enyaw. I liked it from the get go, but that pic is....wow. You planning on cracking that sucker? Nice pick up and thanks for sharing.

Thanks, it is a good-looking coin in hand.
@loonielewy -I'm keeping the roll intact for my roll collection. I have a friend that is cracking a roll, I can add it to my flip collection that way.

Since this seems to be the Loonie forum, I have an interesting one that I found in a sealed mint roll back in 1996. I had initially posted this in the Canadian variety and error forum, but I think Loonies fans will be interested in seeing it here too. In1996 it appears that the planchets were stamped from nickel and then plated with aureate bronze. The bronze plating was 8.5% and the total finish coin was 7.0 grams. This coin weighs in at 6.07 grams, which is lighter than I would expect with it only missing 8.5% plating. I would think it should be around 6.4 grams like the unplated hockey teams set shown in this forum. I have researched possible foreign planchets that the mint could have been using in 1996, and I find no close matches to that size and weight. This coin is also magnetic. This coin appears to have missed the plating process altogether. I'm sure the coining process automation has failsafes before and after coining, so how this was made is a mystery. This kind of error in production is usually due to a human intervention of some type. I am considered sending this coin to PCGS for grading and mint error certification. Any additional thoughts or comments?

ezryder. Reminds me of a friend. I don't know what to say about this loon, and I am no expert about composition. There is something off about it. It may be the lighting. Now I'm speculating here....It looks too round from 11:00 to 5:00 on the obverse. Possibly a small planchet in diameter or thickness that didn't bring the collar die into play fully. SPP would be our best bet on this. Don't grade it until you get an answer, if it's fake, you wasted it. Good luck.

loonielewy, thankyou for your comment.
As far as this coin being some how fake, I have very good knowledge of the provenance of this coin. It was found by me in a sealed mint roll from the bank, it has never been in circulation and has never even left my house.
After your post I had a closer look at the edges of this coin. It does seem to have 11 flats but they don't seem quite as well defined as a regular plated loonie, although this may be an optical allusion due to the bright nickel finish.
I need to get some fresh batteries for my digital micrometer and do a deep dimensional dive on this coin.
It looks to me that this coin is quite possibly 2 distinct mint errors. The first obvious one is the missing plating and the second less obvious one is the weight which can't be explained away by missing plating or by a planchet tolerance minimum material condition.
Also in your post you refer to SPP? What are u referring to?

SPP-Ottawa is a member/mod here. An expert on Canadian errors. He may have something to add. Good luck.

This is the third different forum that Loonie has been posted on. Most agree that it is an unplated loonie but needs to be sent to a TPG to get a definite answer.
