I was thrilled to find this 1936 S Wheat penny in the wild. When I first saw the clip, I thought most likely someone took wire cutters to it. But then as I look at it more and more, seems odd that the metal protrusions stick out above the rim. I'm not sure anymore. Any thoughts?

Sorry, that's not a clip - just a sharp cut on the rim, likely done deliberately.

100% PMD (most likely wire cutters). The squeezing force has extruded a small amount of copper beyond the edge of the coin.

Too bad, because otherwise it is in pretty nice shape.

Added: the frog brings up a really good point: the word "clip" has a specific numismatic meaning--based on the title, I was kinda expecting to see a partial planchet.

It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It's not an error.

Thanks all. Sorry I don't know all the numismatic vocabulary. I have a lot of coins, but I'm new to assessing them.
