a Krugerrand is 22 karats
And that is the reason I don't invest in Krugerrands. In Canada, investment grade gold or platinum needs to be 99.5% or better, 22K is 91.7%. Silver needs to be 99.9%. Any lower level of purity is not considered investment grade but a collectible and therefore triggers sales tax. Same for UK Sovereigns, older Britannias, all US pre 1933 gold and all older circulating silver. Note that Palladium is not considered an investment metal so purchases of palladium are taxable. The tax applied ranges from 5% through 15% depending on your province.
