They just figured that there was too much water out there in Indiana..! They didn't want the buffalo's to drown or anything so the figured that if they placed the them in Ol' Dans corral they would be safe. Problem..! They didn't advise OldDan that those folks from Indiana were born rustlers...!! catman

Catman, Hold it down a bit! Getting the gang together as we speak. Shoot, Kyra has joined the group now and is saddling her mule right now!!! If my nickels don't come pretty soon we will be forced to RIDE OUT and while we are there we just as well spread out across some of those other western states as we all don't get out of Indiana very often! It would be much easier if we could get all of you to just meet us halfway in an effort to save time and money. How about somewhere along the Rocky Mountains, Denver side? Lets say Estes Park? We will spend a day or two together, enjoy each others company, before the robbing so bring plenty of collectibles and cash. Tell Old Dan to get that herd on the trail to Colorado! Love it when a plan comes together!

Hey Crystalk,
Believe it or not when I was going to college I worked on a dude ranch in Estes Park during one summer to earn extra money. I was a waiter. It might be fun to see how it has changed over the last 35 years.

I have been there a couple of times and really fell in love with the place but do not know if there is a coin shop there or not? I guess, if we must, we could go in to Denver to find a coin shop and visit the Mint? Been quite a while since I have been there also? Guess Old Dan is busy searching his buffalos today?

Oh, by the way Catman, I am now up to 16 proofs! There seems to be more interest in them NOW so bidding is picking up! Afraid the cheap ones will SOON be history. Really glad I jumped quickly on the ones I got! Darn shame I don't have my tax return YET as I could have gone hog wild then!!!

Finished searching and now have a report to make: Following a careful examination of the new Westward Journey ‘Bison’ nickel, I believe it can be safely said that they don’t even come close to the original ‘Indian Head’ (Buffalo) 5 cent piece. I soon learned to start my grading process with the Jefferson side of the coin. If this coin has laid on anything harder than a very soft cloth, it will show-up somewhere on Jefferson’s likeness. This side of the coin if exposed to anything that comes along, will soon make it seem as if it had been handled in a careless manner. Way too large of areas that will do nothing more than show every nick, scratch and rub that may happen. Be very careful with this side of the coin. By starting with this side, you can very quickly discover that about 80% of the coins can be placed in the “giveaway” can. The ‘Bison’ side is a shallow impression of a very nicely done animal. It would appear that they forgot to set any pressure on he die when it was dropped and the coin suffered the loss of character. Very weak strikes and both the bison and lettering show the results. I sure hope the rest of you have better luck than I had in finding really good coins in this issue. IMHO, I’m thinking the grade of 68 and above will be few and far between with this coin. Any time you flat-land dudes from Indiana want to meet in Colorado, and can figure out which direction you got to drive, I'll meet you and your gang of rustlers and bring along a rope necktie for each one of you. Riding a mule to rustle Buffalo! You got to be kidding. ROFL

Old Dan, WE got our selves a sun dial to guide us, er....just a second, nah I mean a compass! Yeah thats it...a compass and all we got to do is wave our hand over it and ask it where some place is and it automatically points us in the right direction. You may thing us Hoosiers are stupid but we AIN'T!!! Also we don't need any neckties as we will be wearing casual cloths due to all the riding! Kyra's mule is very fast!

Old Dan, thanks for the description of the Buffalo nickels. Will give all of us something to guage our finds by. I was afraid they would be poorly struck so that is why I decided to spend a little for the proofs. All I have seen are the photos so I am anxious to see how they turned out as well.

Well my Bison just arrived and Old Dan summarized them perfectly. I really like the designs, but a gem is going to be few and far between.

Well Catman, I lied as I have bought more proofs this morning! Finally broke down and purchased 4 more of each nickel as I decided, if I didn't have a few of the "Ocean in View", they would be the ones to rise in value the quickest. Guess I am covering my hind end a little so now NONE of them will do much! You can all blame me for holding the secondary market in check on these issues! With my luck being what it is your best bet is to purchase any thing and every thing that I don't!!! You should be safe there!!!

A mule is about the only way you can get anywhere fast around here with all this snow! I've still yet to see any Buffalo nickels in any shape or form. Rachel [:p]

All right, now we got you to open them and take a look. What is your diagnosis? Or should I have ask, how many of those 70's did you find?

Well lets just say I missed the ole 70's by a tad bit? Actually the coins overall were pretty good quality compared to what I have been reading in other posts. Maybe the Mint made sure to send me "FIRST STRIKE" bags! Yes, that was probably it! Honestly there are some very nice nickles here that would go MS63 to MS65 (maybe) so I am not to disturbed at these busness strikes I have received. Actually thinking of ordering another bag or two. NOW do you guess THINK you can convience me to order or not to order?
