Agreed for the most part. 10k and non NCLT means almost certainly these will be available at a significant discount in the near future. That doesn't necessarilty diminish the appeal for coin collectors.

That said, I'd expect the set would appeal as much or more to circulation collectors than NCLT collectors. I also thought we were getting away from the notion that every offering has to be flippable for a profit to be interesting. Oh well.

This is directly from the product description. "Each one is an actual test specimen. All six tokens in this set are test specimens that come direct from the Royal Canadian Mint's R&D facility, where each one was used in laboratory and calibration testing."

They are not simply cranking out a bunch of tokens using old dies.

Common way to sell something. Incomplete facts.

This row (from RCM description) doesn't say, that all 6 tokens from all 10000 sets have been used 'for calibration'
But definitively all 6 have been used - means, none of the six was produced for the beauty only.

Exact quote from the mint:

"Each one is an actual test specimen!"

Just have to ask, why would the RCM need 10000 test tokens to test what ? if so these sets would carry lots of markings and nicks just seems improbable but the ad does says as it is, so did the RCM ad on the Big coin series where they said something like it's the only place to get the box set but we know what happened there. There is nothing wrong with test token collecting, some goes for really good prices, there is a couple really cool token in this set, but at 10000 mintage it's just another monthly release.

I've been wondering that, too. Do they send thousands to vendors for testing?

This is why I have a hard time believing anything they claim.

It seems based on the ebay link from this discussion (I'm unable to see them on the mint site yet), that these coins are all mint state. I think the comment "Tried and tested future technology innovations from the RCM's R&D facility" just means that the innovations are tried and tested, not the 10,000 sets that they produced. Misleading I know.

No and no again.

It directly says about each one from the set, and not each one from 6x10000 tokens.

By purpose it written using misleading language.
Like people already said, majority of "used" tokens will have some marks. But if RCM will distribute perfect tokens - they have been used nowhere, except their "R&D" facility, where the sets supposedly passed so called QA control.

I've collected 'test tokens' in the past. This set however has one thing the others didn't, that is a bit disconcerting to me - a known mintage, and that seems awfully high in my opinion of 10,000 sets.

I see photos of identical scratches on two of the tokens, which indicate to the public that they are used. These scratches look digitally added.

Some of the other test tokens in the past were obtained by other means, making them rare, whereas this token set is mass produced and sold by the mint.

Here is the description for the 2012 RCM Test Tokens:

Quote:
NEW! A piece of history in the making of the new coins! Your coin set showcases the latest innovations in the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing effort to advance the science of coin engineering and manufacturing. The test tokens and circulation coins in your coin set incorporate all-new security features and were struck using the Mint's world-renowned, multi-ply plated steel technology.

This is a special opportunity for you to own uncirculated test tokens and coins for the new $1 and $2 that feature the Mint's leading-edge security features.

What is a test token?
The Royal Canadian Mint created these non-circulation test tokens to calibrate coin acceptance equipment in the vending industry. These test tokens incorporate the new security features, such as the laser mark micro-engraving, virtual image, and edge-lettering specific to each type of coin. Approximately one million test tokens of each denomination were produced, which were all sent back to the Mint. Mintage on this coin set is limited to only 25,000 sets worldwide!

Your coin set features uncirculated test tokens adding to the uniqueness of this special coin set.

Special Features:
A FIRST! Your historic set contains Canada's new one-dollar and two-dollar coins, as well as the first test tokens created during their development.
NEW! The test tokens in your set are uncirculated versions of the original tokens distributed throughout the vending industry to calibrate coin acceptance equipment.
Limited to 25,000 sets worldwide from the 1 million test tokens created!
Eligible for letter mail shipping ($2.99 Canada only, limit of 3 per letter mail).

Design:
The next generation of one-dollar and two-dollar circulation coins also incorporates new, visible security features which further enhance the security and integrity of Canada's coinage system. The reverse (or tails side) of both coins features a laser mark micro-engraving, and the two-dollar coin also contains a virtual image and edge-lettering.

Packaging:
Your unique circulation coins and test tokens set is sealed inside a transparent plastic film and presented in a keepsake envelope. A beautiful reminder in the history of Canadian coin design!

The difference between the 2012 RCM Test Tokens and the 2018 Tokens is the 2012 tokens are uncirculated while the 2018 ones have been tested in the RCM's R&D facility.

However, can you call the 2018 Tokens circulated if they never left the RCM facilities? Apparently 1 million was created in 2012 and sent to the vending industry.

I know for a fact that not all the 2012 security loonies and toonie tokens where not returned, a friend who owns about 500 snack machines was sent a couple rolls of each to recalibrate because the new coins are smaller and he paid a small deposit for the rolls which he forfeited by not returning them. This was for a major circulation coins and created a major costs to the vending industry so one could see a large test token mintage for the 2012 coins but these are for internal R&D still can't see the reasoning for 10000 mintage, but the ad does says what it is, now do you trust the RCM wordings. My thoughts on the 2012 tokens were many was not returned and they decided to market the surplus and made the unreturned coins virtually worthless.

I briefly considered ordering a set - the concept is interesting to me - but decided against it.

With my collecting OCD, if I bought this test token set I would be strongly tempted to go back and purchase all of the previous test sets the RCM has released - it's just not a collecting path I want to pursue!

Now, if the Mint were to market a 36mm silver dollar test token with some new security feature...
