Large date. Upper tip of 9 points to bottom of 7. Small date the tip of 9 will point more to the middle of 7.

Whoa...wait a sec.
We're usually not accustomed to seeing small dates circulated like this.
What I'm seeing is a real Small Date where the date's been beaten down by circulation.
The hook of the 9 is there, although flattened, and the shape/position of the 7 matches diagnostics I use.
You found this in circulation? Well done!

I sampled up your pic--small date!

Way Cool! I have been pulling 70's for about a month and this one looked different to me so I thought I would post it. Thanks for the feedback. July has been a good month so far. First a wild indian then 70 S small date.

Again, that's quite a find from circulation. I've been looking for a small date from circ. for 15 years, but you found one!

I think $10-15 is a good ballpark for that coin.

Coindexter, I did a blowup of one of your Lincolns. The 9 had me confused at first, but I think the hook is due to Machine Doubling, since the 7 has the LD shape.

I agree and would like to add that the weak LIBERTY was a flag for me, even though I feel the other markers are more accurate. The link Kurt gave explains why the weak LIBERTY is not a definitive test.

However, of all of the people asking about their potential 1970-S SD finds lately, this was the first I have seen with a weak LIBERTY, so it got me thinking before I saw all of the replies!

wardtom--good luck!
I didn't think a small date could be found in circulation, but here's a documented case.

Hay Curt here is a blow up of the other 1970-s. It looks like the curl of the 9 makes it point towards the middle of the 7. But my eye isn't that well trained yet.

Coindexter, I saw that one too. When I'm in doubt about the 9, I look at the 7, which seems to be the LD variety to me (compare to my link above on LD/SD diagnostics).

I just found this on e-bay looks just like mine. They are calling it a large date over small date. Weird I also thought it was just Machine Doubling error.
