I had to share about my most recent visit to my favorite local coin shop. For a while now there has been a box of older Jefferson nickels that I've always walked by. But the other day, I had about an hour before the auction board at the store was gonna close, so I decided to go through the box, just in case someone threw in a key date or something...and here's what I came up with: 1x 1938S 1x 1938D 2x 1939S 2x 1939D 1x 1950D All are in circulated condition, but for double face value, I thought they were good purchases. AND to top it off, someone posted a "1909 Lincoln Cent" on the auction board, which I ended up purchasing for $3. When I got home and took a better look, it turned out to be a 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent, in about F-10 in my opinion. So over all, all the coins for that trip cost me under $4.00. Over all a good day

Nice purchases especially the 50-D and 09-VDB! You probably meant F12 on the VDB.

Those are nice finds! I think the VDB is $10-20 now.

Man, I wish I had a wider variety of coin shops. Then maybe I would find one with something cool like a box of early date jeffersons.
I have two coin shops in the adjacent town, and one of them is about 75 percent jewlry store and are overpriced on their coins. So I don't even shop at that one. I like the other one just fine but they don't have any modern date coins at all. And the closest coin shops besides those two is one ninety minutes to the east of me, two hours to the west of me, five hours to the north of me, and 2 hours to the south of me. Coin collecting just isn't popular in my neck of the woods.

I guess I'm pretty lucky, considering the location of local coin stores...I've got two in the same town as me (both about 3 miles from my house), and another one less than 10 miles away. However, the only one I really frequent (best prices and I've become friends with the owner and his two sons) is one of the ones in my town...the store that I mentioned in my original post. Oh yeah, and I meant F-12...typo...whoops

That is what I miss about living a bigger city, you actually have variety and places to go. I love my local store but would like to have some other options. When I was a kid I remember getting bored and went around and checked out a couple of coin stores to see if I wanted to back involved with it ans was overwhelmed at that time because how each store was so different. There was one with a bid board and I wished they did that where I am, you can always pick up at least one coin for almost nothing.

To penny pincher, I know the feeling about not living in a large city, I am four hours north of Sydney with no coin shops only market stalls with limited collections. Hence this is why this forum is so great to be able to converse with persons of a similar interest. Keep it going. regards

I am fortunate enough to have 2 shops in my area(15 min apart), but none of them keep any quantity of decent items. They also gouge the hell out of you if you want to sell them something. The buy prices are always outrageous, even for common date stuff. Only one shop 45 minutes away will give you a decent price or has a decent selection. But with gas prices and ebay, who needs to drive!

I wish that I had a coin shop near me! The nearest one (excluding a flea market) is about 25 miles away. But whenever I go to my Grandma's house there's a coin shop about 5 minutes away, which is really nice.

It just goes to show that with a little patience, you may com across a rarity, I mean a 50-D for 10 cents is a great buy
