I should weigh in here since this directly affects me, who was paired against jbuck. I think we should just declare the entire round null and void and just re-do the round with a new coin that cannot be tracked and keep jbuck in the contest. I would not be in favor of him forfeiting to me.

All previous coins in this contest, as far as I know, could not have been tracked successfully, so this was one exception. I do think, that in the spririt of the contest, that one can use the internet to try to arrive at a "guess", but in this case, the searching led to the exact price. jbuck should be kept in the contest because it was never explicitly stated that he couldn't search the polish ebay site or wherever he found it. That was good detective work on his part and I'm sure he probably got very excited about finding the exact price.

Since you ended the round early because of this issue, others in the round hadn't all gotten their guesses in. So I think the best decision would be to just re-do the round, with a new coin and make sure it cannot be directly tracked to that auction.

As for the other questions about how to run the contest, that is entirely up to you, but I like the way this contest has been running.

KEEP jbuck IN!

Wow! Looks like a lot happened since yesterday. It doesn't matter to me what happens since it's all for fun. I won't have computer access from 9/26 to 10/5 so if something happens in that time I'll be a no show.

What mycrob said. Let's back up and start over again.

However, I wouldn't pay more than $1,044 for that coin. Even if I had $1,045 to spend on coins. Which I don't.

jbuck, you scamp ... remember what happened to Till Eulenspiegel!

I would suggest that future playoffs with head to head be changed so that the person who guesses first does not have the disadvantage of his opponent guessing $1 higher or lower, perhaps by having a different but similar coin for each opponent to guess at.

nod2003 has a very good point here . Let's see the example of pls (because his was the first guess). So, pls has to guess the price from thin air .. while his rival who waits till the end of the round will only have to decide MORE than pls or LESS - 50% chance of success.

It's rather not possible to find 2 coins of the same type and approximately the same grade ending the same day here, unless you want all your coins to be Polish .

An other way would be to:
* make all rounds head-to-head,
* but without anyone knowing who is his next opponent.
Therefore, the advantage of guessing late would be largely eliminated, and double guesses (two people guessing the same amount) would be permitted. The pairs would be generated automatically and then shuffled just to be sure it's random.
The number of rounds would be directly related to the number of participants. I have prepared a grid for this and it doesn't make me any more trouble

Thanks for that information, in fact I was planning to have it started in the week of Oct. 6-12th.

I would suggest there is no advantage since the answer is not yet known!

Thank you !
Due to the unpredictability of the PM system I'll post a note here that I've sent it.
But could you elaborate on what is JIM money?

It is quite possible he never existed. I made the claim in a previous thread that I was an AI program using the Forum as a real-time Turing test, so I might not exist either!

If he did exist, then I find it unlikely that I (like he had allegedly) will die from the Black Death. Then again, in this world, all things are possible.

One quick comment on the head-to-head. I do not think the problem is in having the two opposing players guessing the same coin. It becomes an over-under, coin-flip. Nothing to devious about that.

The problem might be that using the same coin for all of of the matches; but even that is not really a big deal as long as DL uses coins that are not visible too searches. Using a current auction and ending the round before it closes has the problem that late guessers will be closer to the end price.

I will have to mull this over some more; it has been a long day!
Rest in Peace

I will state that the amount of fun here could be inversely proportional to an increased amount of rules and regs.

I'm STILL having fun; and I don't mind going first. Hey, I'd even enjoy going up against Till - I mean, jbuck!
