WHAT?!?!

I fail to see the problem in this situation. Jbuck got extremely lucky in his search for the price guess, and actually found the coin Pictured in the play-off round?!?! Sure he is an Internet Wizard, But we ALL search! At least I do prior to making my "Guess" I try to find similar listings and use the "Realized Values" of particular items to glean my "Guess". Believe me if I had found the exact coin in any of the previous rounds I would have used it as "My Guess". This is/was the playoffs, and Jbuck brought his A game, and I was not expecting any less than that. As I see it there were no preset rules preventing us from searching completed auctions from the beginning, the fact that you picked a one of six Pattern coin, might have made that a bit readily search-able, although I did not find it I did base my guess on the sales of the non pattern pieces sold throughout the world. Well that's my 4 and 1/2 gr.( Two Cents) hope for an amicable conclusion in any event. Paul

Of course, one can guess basing on one's knowledge. One can guess just like that having no idea of the price. One can also look the coin up in Krause. Or search at ebay etc.

Getting ahead by finding the exact price is not what this contest was meant for.
It's GUESS the price, not FIND the price..

PM not got.

So if he had lowered his "guess" to $22,500 we'd still be on track
There are seven other pairings involved in this round, and the only one affected by this "infraction" is mycrob who's "guess" is at $15,000 not too far off from Jbuck's?!?!
So obviously those who weren't allowed to complete their "guesses" are now invalid and therefore unnecessary. So I guess that there is nothing left to say except, Thanks for the contest! Fourth place is better than last! and Coingratulations to;

That's what I thought. We would never know. That's why this formula must be scrapped and replaced by the one I mentioned, or related to an not-internet source, if anyone would be willing to restart this.

It's a very Polish method to find loopholes/irregularities/omissions in the rules and thus achieve things the easy way sometimes depriving others from the hard-earned success. I oppose this method and that's why I try to eliminate it everywhere I can, even in such insignificant instances. I hope this is clear.

It did not say much, just for you to try sending again.

I wanted to keep this between DL20K and myself, but I might as well share it with the rest of my friends.

Of course I searched. The rules never said we could not search. I thought this contest was brilliant from the beginning. Researching past sales and making a nice educated guess. In previous rounds, my searches only yielded similar coins that were currently for sale by searching the Polish ebay site. However, since I have no account on that site, I was never able to check any closed sales. I figured that was fair, because I wanted to make a fair guess. It is no different than the shopping around we do in real life.

When I could not find a similar coin for this round, I tried the Google route. Surely the sale you used would be protected, right? Wrong! It popped up right there, the picture matched and the price was right in front of my eyes! What am I to do? I could not, in good conscious, allow myself to win with that. I thought I would just not post a guess, but then I decided to have some fun!

I decided to go ahead and post exact price (in both US$ and zl, to tip my hand, as it seems to have done) as my guess. I would await for DL to PM me (which he did) so we could have a good laugh (which we did not since I did not get the PM). When I started this, I did not expect to be away from the net for too long.

I hoped he and I could "keep quiet" and see how this unfolded. After this round, I would have forfeited to Myrcob and we all would have had a good laugh. Well, best laid plans and all...

DL, I hope you will continue the contest. It was a great educational experience for all of us, even for those of us that searched. Trying our hands at grading the coin, finding similar ones, and "guessing" the going rate!

If you do continue this, I will keep out of the play. I will observe, throw out the occasional silly comment, and keep up the fun. Please, do not let the fun stop because the prankster that I am got carried away. I propose you restart round two and insert Onejinx in my spot, since he had the next closest guess from the previous round.

COINAHOLIC, thank your for defending me; a sign of a true friend!

Again, DL, I apologize for the misunderstanding and I hope we can continue to be friends.

Jbuck, thanks for posting this clarification since I haven't received any PM.. I'll write it here since the PMs.. was what got us into all this mess.

So, I admit, it was exactly as I suspected at first. You did google it which is not prohibited, as usually google yields the right TYPE and YEAR coins, but not the same exact coin. Especially when searches are performed out of Poland (the results are different from region to region). I have not predicted this scenario to happen.

I immediately noticed that the price in both ZL and $$ must mean that the original auction has somehow been found. That's why I sent the PM, in which I asked "How have you found the auction, did I leave a link to the archives in one of the previous pages of the thread? If so please tell me on which page it is." or something along these lines. I didn't take into account the fact that this PM didn't arrive. It usually only don't receive YOUR (meaning incomming) messages, while the ones I send have always arrived until now. They worked even yesterday (both sent and received from Mint_Marq).

So, I'd like to apologize for any accusations that I might have made, since the lack of response to a friendly in nature message caused me to think in the wrong direction.

My conclusion:
- changing the system as stated earlier is needed.
- is improving the PM system possible ? It might cause a lot of confusion and misjudgement e.g. when trade is concerned!

Regards,
DL.

Thank you for the quick response. It is exactly what expected from you, cordial and understanding.

As for the PM situation, I think the best one can do is post on the forum that a PM was sent and hope the recipient reacts accordingly. I think the problem is that with a lot of the spam in the world, filters are over-selective. I know our Barracuda at work is tough to get past and I have to white-list almost everything. Even though I have coincommunity.com in the white-list, it treats each one different because they are still sent in your name with your return-address.

Anyway, after everyone has a chance to let this situation soak in, let the games begin again!
Rest in Peace

Not a problem jbuck Was trying my best to stay on the side of impartiality, as I consider us all to be friends!!

It was my first attempt at international diplomacy, and I'm afraid it does not look good for my political future!

I'm all for a redo of the play-offs just set the time and item and I'm there!

In the end it will be up to DL20K as to where we go from here, maybe if I just didn't sleep we could have avoided this whole fiasco
Rest in Peace

Darn. There are winners! I'm going to go check on whom has won And post in a bit.

Of course, I did check out the coin site, and a bit more at one point, but I wanted my best guesstimate not the gleanings from a search.

I was going to guess US$ 14500 and been way off. Dog ornaments!

Yes, now since the villain is identified (the spam).. we might think about restarting. But since we're at a standstill anyway, I'd like to hear some suggestions about the contest. What should be changed? What isn't as it should be (do NOT mention the varying time of beginning and ending of rounds - I will try to solve that one, read on ). Should the formula (12 rounds+playoffs) be changed only to 12 rounds (scrap the rest)?

I will be moving soon, and I was planning to change the timing to be - 1 double round per 5 days (then 1 day's break). Double would mean two coins to guess in a round.
This would enable me to continue the contest, but also people who can't make it before the deadline due to unexpected problems would benefit. It would also be clear from the beginning that the round starts on Sunday and ends on Thursday. This stability would also eliminate my mistakes as to "is it 3 days from the start or not?".

Of course, we do have Coinaholic, who always keeps track of this, but I feel I shouldn't employ others to do things that I am capable of doing.

Also, I believe Parklane64 was making some statistics of the main rounds. If you are reading this, could you post the final version?
Rest in Peace

Moving? Is it going to be to an easier address Or am I going to have to learn another hard one

Or are you coming to the States

Maybe just the straight rounds would be best, it was for me but I was interested to see how I would have ended up after the head to head playoff matches (as it appears I would have made it to round 3 anyway)

Don't know about any other suggestions? Oh mklpatrick Go ahead, guess away, what could it hurt! But if you get it wrong...

I would suggest that future playoffs with head to head be changed so that the person who guesses first does not have the disadvantage of his opponent guessing $1 higher or lower, perhaps by having a different but similar coin for each opponent to guess at.
