Thanks scopru! Glad to see you back...
Ok take a deep breath everyone...
George VI 1946 set..2 Annas
2 Annas = 22.3 x 25.5mm..5.8gr..Edge Plain..Cupro-Nickel..KM#542
Here is one of my examples..
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras
There were 2 types of reverse used..See details below..

There were 2 types of Obverse used ..See details below..

Mintage.See details below..
Bombay....52,500,000..Mintmark 2 raised dots either side of date..
Calcutta..67,276,000..No mintmark..
Lahore....25,480,000..No mintmark..

British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

OK...First here is my example of the 2 Annas Bombay mint..
Obverse Type 1
Reverse Type 2
You can also see in the right field of the obverse 2 diamond control marks...
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

Next my examples of the 2 Annas Calcutta/Lahore mint...
Note..Distinguishing between the Calcutta and Lahore mint!!
I've been researching this dilemma for a while now...Most references state that the only way you can differentiate between the Calcutta and Lahore mints is via the small diamond control marks generally found in various locations on the coin I've checked a lot of these coins and the control marks don't seem to be consistent and so I must admit I'm not really taken by this idea..Yet we have 3 very distinctive types here, and my personal opinion is this..
Bombay.....Obverse Type 1..Reverse Type 2 (Raised dots either side of date)
Calcutta...Obverse Type 1..Reverse Type 2 No mintmark
Lahore.....Obverse Type 1..Reverse Type 1 No mintmark
This also sits well with the mintage numbers, Bombay and Calcutta using the same reverse type 2 (Very easy to find) Whereas the Lahore with its lower mintage using a type 1 reverse (Slightly less on the market)..Any thoughts welcomed?

Coin 1..Obverse Type 1..Reverse Type 2 Calcutta ?
Coin 2..Obverse Type 1..Reverse Type 1 Lahore ?

British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

There is one coin variation that is quite rare that I luckily acquired for a few bucks recently (Seller obviously didn't know what it was)...Difficult to find..
Calcutta...Obverse Type 2...Reverse Type 2
Obverse...Incuse wings in each corner..Crown touching 'N'.....

Thanks scopru and Director...
Last coins in the 1946 George VI set..1/4 Rupee and 1/2 Rupee..

Note..In 1946 there were no 1 Rupee coins minted..

On the 23rd May, 1946, the government suspended the minting of silver coins and authorized the minting of the 1/4 and 1/2 rupee denominations in pure nickel. These 2 denominations were the first to have the new redesigned reverse depicting a tiger..The design finally approved for the new pure nickel coins showing the Indian tiger was modelled by Mr. P. W. M. Brindley.. Mr. P. W. M. Brindley, was formerly the Assistant Artist/Engraver at the Calcutta Mint and who had been appointed to the post of Artist/Engraver at the Bombay Mint in October 1941, he continued as Artist/Engraver for both the Bombay and Calcutta mints for the remainder of the British period.
I must say I do quite like the simplicity of the new design...Everyone to their own...
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras
1/4 Rupee = KM#548..19.5mm diameter..2.9gr..Edge reeded..Nickel..
1/2 Rupee = KM#553..24.0mm diameter..5.8gr..Edge reeded..Nickel..

Both coins were only minted at Bombay(Mumbai)..See details below..
1/4 Rupee...83,600,000..Mintmark raised diamond below date.
1/2 Rupee...47,500,000..Mintmark raised diamond below date.
As I said previously this is a date set that I've not collected in the past so I've spent quite a few hours researching this date series along with my scant notes from many years ago..(surprisingly very accurate)!
Here are my 2 examples..

Waiting for a couple of coins to arrive and will post a group photo..Paul

I also have a complete set of what is pictured here, including 1/2 and One Rupee. I like them because of the design and scarce (not rare) metal in which they are made.

I also have a fascination for square coins; have collected 112 types of modern machine made square coins so far.
For about 40 years, I have been actively collecting as many different types as I can. Not much cost to build such a collection, but lots of long term patience is needed.

...An interesting collecting area..Wow looking at whats out there..amazing...Have you thought about branching out into the ancient area aswell?

Will be running into the 1947 set next which includes the new Rupee...Thought it would be appropriate as this was the last year of Colonial coinage in India...Paul

Running into the last year of British Colonialism in India 1947.
First I'll start with the 1 Pice..
This new denomination design commenced in 1943 substituting the old style 1/4 Anna. It was the first holed bronze coin used by the British in India and with the exception of 1946 it ran from 1943 through to 1947

1 Pice = 1/4 Anna...21.30mm diameter..1.85gr...Edge plain..Central hole..Bronze..#532/#533.

There were 3 types of crown used see details..
Note..The round crown was only used in 1943 at Bombay using the diamond mintmark and also unique to this coin is the date and legend which are much smaller than all the other coins (referenced as #532.) See detail..
All the other 1 Pice coins are referenced as #533.
The 1 Pice was minted at four different locations.
Bombay, Calcutta, Lahore, Pretoria (South Africa). Mintmarks see detail..
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras
In 1947 the 1 Pice was only minted at Calcutta and Bombay
Bombay....Mintage 43,654,400 (Diamond below date) High crown..#533
Calcutta..Mintage 153,702,080 (No mintmark below date) High crown..#533
Here is one of my examples..1947 Calcutta (no mintmark)..To the left and right of date is the value written in Hindi and Urdu..

I agree. While I like some coins with a geometric lathe produced pattern (Newfoundland coinage), it can get a little monotonous at times.

On a separate note, how well do those little diamond marks hold up on circulated coins?

In my opinion the set design was cut 'per se' and any control or deciphering mintmarks thereafter were added at the specific mint house...This can be seen on many coins where the detail on the coin itself can be UNC whereas the mintmark or control marks, can be, but not always, quite faint.

Second coin up in the 1947 set is the 1/2 Anna....In my opinion this years little denomination holds one of the rarest coins in the whole series...

1947 1/2 Anna..17.3 X 17.3..2.9gr..Edge Plain..Copper Nickel..KM#535.1/KM#535.2

Minted at 3 locations..
Calcutta..KM#535.2 126,392,000 No mintmark..
Lahore....KM#535.2 No record but probably included in the Calcutta total..Mint mark see detail...(Again I'm still not 100% taken by this identification system but there seems to be no other alternative)
Bombay....KM535.1 Very rare!...Supposedly a mintage of 24,000,000..Mintmark the dashes either side of the date are broken with a dot...See detail..
Note..I have only ever seen ONE of these coins and assume they were withdrawn due to adequate numbers of this denomination still in circulation from the prevoius year? Maybe a good time to dig out your 1947 1/2 Anna coins and check the dashes you might have a lttle gem!
