Quote: If you tell them what it's worth, you'll get the even more annoying question: 'you spent blah blah blah on a coin? Or the second annoying question "Why don't you sell it?"

Where I live no one says anything about anything they have of value.

Quote: This is funny. Really? I get asked that a lot. My standard response is usually "Because if I did then I wouldn't have it and I'd have to buy another one, and it would probably cost me even more."

Quote: Would you feel comfortable sharing your collection with everyone on CCF? Digitally, behind the vail of anonymity? As already stated most people here already do that. We mostly all post photos of our coins and some are really worth a lot of money. Some have their own web sites where they post entire collections.

I carry conspicuously large and lustrous semi-numi gold pocket piece. There's quite a few S. American options that can be had at or near bullion prices.
It rarely stays in the pocket though. Flip it to play heads or tails while bored waiting in line. Practice doing finger rolls with it or spin it on the table top while waiting to meet some one at Starbucks/bar etc.
Makes for an awesome conversation starter, a great way to introduce others to numismatics, and keeps you from becoming a smart phone drone or if you're already addicted it'll help wean you off.
If you're a single dude... well... let's just say it's a lot cheaper than buying a Porsche.

If you're excited about coins and your collection in general it's hard not to talk about it. I limit my disclosure to my closest friends and some immediate family. I say "some" because there are a few that I do not trust to keep that information within the family.
One thing that does concern me is I attend a monthly coin club at a local library that is promoted by the library bulletin board. Members bring in their coins that coincide with the meeting topic for show and tell. Others bring in coins to sell during the meeting. There could be many thousands of dollars of coins value at any one meeting and no one seems worried. There's never been an incident but it would certainly be a target rich environment if a thief connected the dots.

I would never carry a piece of gold on me and show it off, but I've had large cents as pocket pieces and I have a Seated dollar with a hole in it that I've considered carrying around.

Yes, only a very few family members know I collect.

I think I see more positive people. Like I said my collection is not worth much But the people I speak to are always interested in what I found and they to look out for me. Almost everyone has a few special coins in a jar box or draw. And likes to talk about them. They are memories

I just bought some nice looking albums to show my coins better. In a good day my collection may be worth a family vacation - if sold separately over 3000 coins

Interesting topic! My family knows I collect but have absolutely no interest in it and only a few chosen close friends know. As others have stated I also keep my collection in a safe. If someone wants it bad enough their going to have to get past the cameras and the dog first. If they can do that then Mossburg and Savage will join the party and we'll as a few throwing knives, a blow dart, and a taser and if they somehow survive that then they deal with a led filled Louisville Slugger! Good luck
