Featured in the Gaspar de Portola sale by Aureo. I was surprised to see that for a coin like this the image of the edge was not provided, so I asked a dealer contact of mine to snap some photos during lot previews.

I'll pop the thumbnails (no pun intended ;) ) here and wait to hear the thoughts of the community before sharing some of mine.

Atribucion muy sillyo.

Looks like a genuine piece... with some silver shaved off (you can see just from the faces the denticles are too short) and then a not-quite-correct edge design re-engraved at some point.

I'm guessing the collector called it "canto especial" and Aureo just went with it to not be difficult.

The curious thing - that's a lot of work to only take about a gram of silver. Usually on pieces like this, at least several grams were taken...

The edge here is a series of rectangles so we know that the coin is not "original" - it is either a fake or a fraud.

A modified coin as realeswatcher suggests is one possibility, however, I would still classify it as fraudulent because of silver theft.

It might be a Contemporary Circulating Counterfeit depending on the density (silver content). Even if it is silver it could have been made in the late 1800's or early 1900's for the China trade.

A very recent numismatic forgery made to fool collectors is also a possibility since today many image transfer technologies can duplicate the appearance of a genuine coin.

This is a coin that should be studied scientifically (weight, SG and XRF) so that it can be properly classified.
