I've been posting here for a couple of weeks and have been learning some valuable information, but I never formally introduced myself.

I am currently in phase 3 of my coin collecting career. As a young boy (phase 1), I had a paper route, and back then, you had to collect from your customers every month, and then pay your supplier. Each month after I did my collections and before I paid my supplier, I would use that money to coin roll hunt. This was in the late 70's early 80's, so you could still get silver, but it wasn't guaranteed by any means. I was about a decade late to the party. I would then also visit the coin store and spend hours looking through the coins and occasionally buy one.

After a long absence from collecting, I had some terrible back issues in 2009 -2011 that took me away from my other hobbies, so I started collecting coins by buying off ebay. I mostly bought large lots of silver at roughly spot pricing (which was a fair bit higher than it is now - no surpise there ). So, I accumulated a lot of silver, but not much in the way of quality coins. After the back problems resolved, I mostly abandoned it for my other active hobbies (Mt. Biking, snow boarding, metal detecting).

Now, unfortunately, I am having back problems again, so I have had to abandon those hobbies and am back into collecting. I am 54 now, and I suspect this time I will stay interested because 1 kid is off to college, and the other is close, and I will have more time.

Anyway, phase 3. Now I am looking to get a bit more focus, pare back on most of the bulk silver and focus on acquiring some higher grade coins. I think this will be much more manageable and fulfilling.

I'm not sure where I will focus yet. For US coins, I think I would like to get a type set of Draped Bust silver coins. I also love the old Austrian and German States coins for their interesting designs. Really, a lot of the old European coins (mostly pre 1800) are interesting to me.

Edit: Looking at Draped Bust Price guide - this is probably unrealistic. I'm honing in on the Capped Bust, and figured the Draped Bust was also manageable, but that is not likely.

Developing collecting goals is a great (& typical) way to go. Just be patient though & look around to get a good feel for pricing.
