I Am Unsure What Happened To This Penny.

I work with money all day, and I found this when cleaning the coin sorter. I was wondering if any of you know why it looks like this. All I can tell is it's a penny from the 1900's. If need be I could check its weight to find out if it's pre- or post- 1982. (The 1985 penny is for comparison)
