Numismatic News - The year 1804 is just magic when it comes to coins. The main reason is the famous 1804 dollar which, of course, was not even produced in 1804 but rather a few decades later. That said, everyone remembers 1804 simply because of the dollar. It's a little ironic as, although the dollar is good, there are a number of other spectacular coins from 1804, including the gold Eagle with a plain '4' which is tougher than the 1804.

There are some awfully good regular coins which were issued back in 1804 and one of those coins was the 1804 quarter which has an interesting story as well a very low mintage.

Tough coin, but the right obverse field was clearly cleaned at one point, not that it really matters.

I have always liked the 1804 Quarter and am happy to still have my example.
In fact, I preferred it over the 1796.

As a big fan of Half Eagles, I'll offer the 1804 Eagle's smaller cousin. Two major Half Eagle varieties were produced that year. The first exhibits a noticeable overdate where the engraver started to punch the date into the die with numeric punches (or logos) intended for the $10 Eagle. It wasn't until the "180" was already punched in before he realized the mistake. The smaller logos were then used to "punch over" the larger numerals. This is an example of the 1804 "Large/Small overdate". The other variety exhibits a normal date, which is commonly referred to as the 1804 "Small Date" or "Small 8".
