i got lucky again tonight. I had just nineteen cents in my pocket as I rolled up to a convenience store on my way home. in the grey granite gravel of the parking lot next to it I spotted the familiar gleaming of coins, so I parked my bike and walked over to have a look; I picked ninety-eight cents out of the gravel. one of the coins was a 1947 jeffie:

$1.17 tonight.

I've been making some changes in the way I approach this now. one of those changes is this:

no more writing on the calendar each night. I'm not finding enough to write down and keep track of, so I'm going to revert back to how I was doing it when I started 7 years ago: toss all the change I find each night into a large container, i'll worry about how much is there when it's full. counting it out as I go along is tedious and maddening, so I'm relieving myself of watching the total grow cent by cent. that'll help shut down my monkey mind's constant thinking about the running total. I can now redirect that brain power toward something else.

time to babble.

regarding notes on the calendar... the only stuff I write on the calendar now are interesting finds (like the '47 nickel) and any night that I happen to hit or top the $1-mark, like last night. I still need to see how many times I reach a dollar. so far this month it's happened just 4 times.

over the weekend I scrolled back through this thread (every fifth page) and read all of the posts- everyone's posts, not just mine... what great stories of found money! I still remembered much of it, but mostly what I wanted to see was what I now look back on as 'the good ol' days', when coins & cash on the ground here seemed to be not just plentiful, but almost limitless, and the cycles took less time to complete. it started as a curiosity, then turned into an experiment. it was successful, so I wanted to see if it could be successful again, and it was... again and again and again, 17 times (and counting) over nearly 7 years (and counting). even though I don't find as much as I used to, people are still tossing, losing or forgetting change. I still find it, and as long as it's still being found I should continue looking, but like I mentioned in a previous post I've been making slight changes to my approach. another of those changes is that I now only rarely bike through the bigger parking lots. I've managed to trim an hour off my travel time each night, effectively cutting my time invested in half. I went from a two-hour night to just one. now when I go out I only check areas that are along the cat route. it's not a coin route anymore, it's a cat route, a set path to the cats that I feed each night. no more straying from the path to search other larger areas. I stick to the shorter route. the places I search now only take a minute or two, or even less in some cases. the cats are the priority, not the coins. I like it better. that move also helps to cut down on the police factor somewhat.

it was looking like I might just drop this entirely, but I've had second thoughts. I can still do this, but it doesn't need to dominate my night.
