GRADE: AU55 Gold CAC sticker I was surprised at the ranges of grades and comments about the coin being ED, cleaned or dipped. The coin is currently up for auction at GC. I was interested in biding, and the coin will most likely sell for AU58 money in the $500 range because of the gold CAC sticker. I like the coin, but I am unsure if I want to go after it strong with the differences in opinion.

Buy what you like. With just two static photos for everyone to grade from, you are bound to see a variety of opinions. People not only have to judge the coin but the quality of the photo to make a decision as to what it might be.

I didn't understand most of the comments either. Not surprised about the bean.

Quote: BH, I just want to understand what on the coin looks like ED? The fields are covered with a sandpaper appearance residue that extends into the devices. The coins surfaces appear to be damaged in these images.

Agree with IGE that opinions will inevitably vary with just a single pic of each side to grade from. Experts in Seated coinage like MIkeF will of course have a better eye. To me, the surfaces (especially the reverse) look lifeless with no depth and reflectivity, as often seen on once-cleaned coins. I didn't much care for it to begin with and still don't, whatever bean it carries.

You would have a return privilege if you bought it. Here's a couple pieces also in PCGS AU grades for comparison. There's no way I'd pay 55 money for that coin. It will be interesting to see where the bidding ends. The top coin is a 50. The bottom coin is a 53.

BH,
I do care for the top coin because of the spots. The bottom coin at 53 is a wonderful coin, and the photos look like True View.
I have a feeling the GC photos are not doing the PCGS AU55 coin justice. I would expect the coin to have nice luster.

Be careful - GC's return terms are perhaps better than those of Heritage et al., but don't try it often.

The 1853 Quarter PCGS AU55 with gold CAC sold for $542. The coin went for more than I was willing to pay. I quit bidding when the coin got over $400. When looking at comps, the value of the coin was not over $400, and I was not going to pay a big premium for a gold sticker.

Very nice AU examples of this date are available for under $400. As a side note: I have owned several CAC Gold stickered pieces over the years and they always command a nice premium at auction. There were two in particular (an AU55 $5 Lib and a MS63 Morgan) that barely deserved a Green sticker IMO. CAC is like other grading services in many ways. Don't take their opinion as gospel.

Does anyone suggest a URL to review for newbies submitting to CAC for the first time wanting to avoid any unforeseen hiccups?

we all know how lighting can affect a coins appearance. the dull fields may be due to that effect. I'm going to bet this coin looks better in hand and stand by my AU55 straight grade

As far as the coin, it seems a lot of people don't understand just how hard it is to get a gold bean. Gold CAC PCGS overrules picture grading 100 times out of 100. Less than 1 percent of CAC stickers are gold last time I checked.
That's not a damaged coin
