Where's the reverse pictures!?
Those coins have acquired desirable toning right where they are at. What they need is to be rinsed with acetone and put into airtites for now. The cent alone is about a $100 coin.

So, after reading this thread, I remembered this on my 70's proof set. The reverse has something on the Kennedy. Is it glue? I am tempted to break it apart to find out.

Since it is a set that is not "rare" by any means it needs to be disassembled and the half needs to be looked at and possibly "conserved" with an acetone dip and water rinse.
Almost looks like it has moisture damage or some mold growing on it.
Yikes!

There are toned coin collectors that would love those.

Carlp007 ... I am referring to your set needing to be "conserved", not the OP's set!
ccobb (the OP) —- your set is just fine and has nice bullseye target toning caused by packaging materials and environmental storage conditions.

Nice toning...it the gases/humidity in the atmosphere that seep in. Maybe a higher sulfer content...durn't take much.

ccobb- Are you the original owner of that set?
carlp007- Need better pictures of that half. If it's what I think it is, the surface of that coin is toast!

I opened the case. Pulled out the Kennedy and used a cotton swab to wipe the spots that were effected. I have attached the picture. The green stuff went away but the areas are still dull. The plastic case was not effected.

Maybe whatever was on that Half contaminated the whole set . Especially the copper cent ,causing that toning .

@USSID18 yes I'm the original owner! Don't ask me why but I (so far) have 66 1970 Proof sets! LOL Still getting things organized. Cant remember why I obtained so many. I have btwn 5-20 sets of every year 1969-1993. I only have 2 mint sets for 1970. Wish I knew what to look for in these sets! I haven't checked any others for toning, I just happened to open that one. I have to look at them all to find it again.

Quote: @USSID18 yes I'm the original owner! Just wanted to know how/where they were stored for all these years. What was the environment they were stored in? Attic? Basement? Constant 70 degree room temp. for the past 50 years? Hot? Cold? Dry? Damp? A/C? No A/C?
