I'd definitely take it to a coin shop and test the silver content. What is the exact weight? From the posted pics, everything looks too... soft.. to me. Would need better pics. LCS is his best shot. If they say real, then spend a couple bucks and send to a TPG but I think it won't get that far.

Thank you all for your replies. It's been very helpful. I don't know if this helps or confuses matters more, but the weight is exactly 26.7 grams ,(scale only goes to tenths), and it isn't magnetic at all. I used a pretty strong magnet. I also did the tissue test and it appears just as real silver should, (as far as I understand it).

Personally, I hope it is real, that would be a cool find! 26.73 is what it should weigh appx depending on how much wear.

Is this a near date? Looking at all the VAMs for this coin, I can find the left shifted/filled S, but nothing about a near date, lots of far dates. I'm curious, hope you can take it to a coin shop to be looked at. Keep us updated.

This is a very expensive date in Mint State condition. It's estimated 5 pieces exist in the world at the MS65 level and they are $150,000+ coins. Even in lowly MS61 this date is $10,000+.

This coin questionable in appearance and is almost certainly a counterfeit. The weight and metallic content mean very little on the piece like this one. It could be 90% silver and of exactly the correct size and weight and be fake.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of a known genuine Mint State 1884-S Morgan to the OP coin.

Excellent side by side photo. I thinks that clearly demonstrates the mushiness in the OP phtotos

Fake Morgan Rides Again.

Note: this particular fake seems to be showing up more often, and that's scary. It's made of real silver, the weight and diameter are correct, and the detailing is a step above average compared to the usual fakes from the no-no site.

1884-S is such a condition scarcity in MS grades that I would not begin to consider purchasing one raw without VERY close inspection. I know you said this one was " inherited" but for those who might be tempted to buy one, if you see a $20000 coin selling for $200, there's a reason...

Sellers selling these fakes need to be prosecuted, otherwise there will just be more and more of them.

Wow, nice job on the side by side. I have no doubt that the ops coin is a fake seeing that.
