Still working my way through the "Misc. G.B." box as my auction prep continues. Here's a piece I haven't laid eyes on in several decades, a counterfeit Bank of England three-shilling token. All of the BOE's regular-strike silver tokens were counterfeited quite extensively and many examples can still be found -- bloody and broken, as it were -- with bits of cheap silver wash still clinging to their crudely struck brass fake planchets.
I remember buying this one for a few bucks because it was the best looking counterfeit I'd ever seen from that era. The holder was marked "Abyssinian Gold," which the dealer explained meant that the copper content was shown by XRF to be at least 90%. This piece is 1.3g underweight and almost 1mm thinner.
For comparison, I'll post the authentic silver official BOE product right below the fake. If I converted these to black-and-white photos and posted them side-by-side I doubt I'd be able to tell them apart. (The weakness at the center of the reverse is a characteristic of all the BOE's 1811-1816 silver tokens.)
