The last two make me wonder whether Parliament had to pass a law to stop the kings from dressing up like Roman emperors for their coinage portraits. I know there were some patterns showing George V in a toga, and many great colonial issues featuring his ceremonial robes/crowns, but when was the last time we saw a laurel wreath on a British monarch's coins? Can't find any wreaths or togas (togae?) after the "First Coinage" of George IV issued 1821-23. I wonder if there was anything in particular that turned that Roman Imperial switch off for domestic coinage.
