Nice Collection... The US $5 with the yellow seal is a North Africa Note issued during WWII to troops. It carries a premium.

Thanks for the pictures. Looks like great stuff. What an adventure you have ahead.

question: How long does the estimate process take?
Do you have to leave the coins for an extended length of time?

I hope the original poster follows up with all his positive and negative experiences with us here... passing on lessons learned to other who may end up in similar scenarios is important.

I wish that he would answer me back or PM me. The Hamilton Coin Club has their monthly meeting Monday and they'll be 30 colletors there .. and there's an auction as well that he can observe or take part in.

They might just be busy with other arrangements that need to be made. Or maybe someone made a decent offer and picked up the whole lot. Sometimes forgoing some money is easier and better than trying to sort through something like this, it can be quite overwhelming, especially for a collection with that kind of value and size. A quick $5k-$15k could be more attractive than $10k-$20k 6 months down the road. I'm not sure what the whole thing was worth, but there was definitely some good value in it.

Large, incoherent collections of lower to medium value stuff can be very exhausting to someone who isn't a professional. There's enough value there to paralyze with fear of selling too cheap, but not enough value to really inspire interest from heavy-hitters.

Unless someone's homebound with infinite free time to do the legwork and list the online auctions, its almost always better to propose the collection for sale to a few different sources and take the best offer.

I had to deal with a collection like this once and vowed that when I go, the theme of my own collection will be QUITE different (a small safe of tightly concentrated, higher value stuff)... but collecting 'everything' can be fun.... for a while.
