English halfcrown of King Charles I, Tower Mint:
Twelve-Days-Of-Your-Favorite-Coins.
Twelve-Days-Of-Your-Favorite-Coins.
This is my largest hammered coin and it must have represented quite a tidy sum of money in the 1640s. I wonder who handled it and who made those scratches across the portrait of the King on horseback? This coin has really been through a Civil War!

Day8
Back in the 90s I was putting collecting on a backburner, concentrating more on family and career than coins. Although that was the case I still dabbled a bit. At that time I was interested more in world coins because of the vast diversity of designs, metals, and just the exotic nature of something that was just plain different from our own coins.
I looked for coins from places that seemed obscure, out of the way , and had limited issues or tiny spans when they were used.
I found one such coin that fit the bill, a 1 franc coin of St. Pierre and Miquelon. Two little islands off the south coast of the island of Newfoundland that are overseas territories of France, they had their own issue in 1948 of one and two franc coins. I've always liked the French designs and this one was in keeping with that.

Day Eight.

This was my "White Whale" at one point. I had let one get away a few years before I found this one.

I wish the tone showed better in my photo.

United Kingdom -- 1 florin, 1849:

Twelve-Days-Of-Your-Favorite-Coins.

This is as close as I'll ever get to a gothic crown (or even a gothic florin).

My coin has a friend, USSID18!

I'm thinking it must be a common date or it wouldn't be in my collection.

It is the most common date-mint for the type set, for sure.

Missed a few

Day 5

Sassanian Empire
Silver drachm of Shapur I
Twelve-Days-Of-Your-Favorite-Coins.

One of the coolest historical figures you never learn about in school, he very nearly succeeded in reconsidering the Achaemenid Empire, conquering much of the Roman east, large swaths of the middle East, and most of the Kushan Empire in modern day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. He may have killed emperor Gordian III, accepted surrender from Philip the Arab on terms humiliating to Rome, and finally captured emperor Valerian I, keeping him as a slave and human footstool until he poured molten gold down the latter's throat to stop him from blubbering about paying ransom.

Day 6

Kingdom of Khwarezm
Sawashfan, c. 750's AD
Silver Dirhem

Twelve-Days-Of-Your-Favorite-Coins.

A delightfully odd coin for my eclectic collection, Khwarezm was one of the last holdouts against the spread of Islam, and its coinage represents the last coins directly descended from the Greek tetradrachm, although by the 8th century they had reduced in weight to circulate with Islamic dirhems. Sawashfan was a tributary king to the Abbasids, but aside from coinage he is only attested via a loan application sent to Tang China in 752. His grandson or great grandson converted to Islam, and the dynasty collapsed a short time later.

Day 7

Kyme Aeolis
Silver trihemiobol, early-mid 5th century BC
Unique - the only example of this denomination known!

Day 8

Medieval India
"Circle Lips" Gadhaiya Paisa
Likely the discovery specimen for a brand new type I am working on a reference for - only a couple dozen of this type known, of which I own about a third!
