Policarpa Salavarrieta 1795-1817
A seamstress by trade, the unassuming lady on this Colombian 2 Peso note is regarded as a "Heroine of the Colombian Independence Movement".
Also known as "La Pola" she operated as a spy for Revolutionary Forces determined to overthrow Spanish Rule. Her trade as a seamstress allowed her to be employed by Spanish families, especially high-ranking military houses where she noted conversations, copied maps & gathered intelligence info.
When 2 young Revolutionaries were captured carrying information, all roads lead to "La Pola" and she was arrested and sentenced to death by firing squad along with 6 others.
She appears on banknotes, stamps and November 14th is National Day of The Colombian Woman.
