The Supreme Court ruled the currency of the U.S. was discriminatory against the blind and visually impaired. What better reason to dump the paper dollar do we need? If you are against the dollar coin you must hate the handicapped? Even Ted Kennedy would have a hard time backing Crane when faced with this argument. It's perfect!

Please note the 's !

They may have a plan in effect to stop minting the dollar note in affect, but since there are so many already printed and in still good condition, they may be waiting for that optimal year to phase out the dollar note.

The US Mint has NOTHING to do with currency or the continuation/discontinuation of the dollar bill. Currency is printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing(BEP) and both the Mint and BEP are under the Dept of Treasury but they are two separate entities. Of course, the Treasury cannot discontinue the dollar bill either- it would take legislative action by Congress.

But yes, I agree with the premise that the dollar bill has to go the way of the dodo for a $1 coin to succeed.

True, but if the Fed just stopped ordering them and ordered more twos, the BEP would stop printing them. There is no need to actually pass legislation. The Fed can satisfy all their orders with twos and dollar coins, they don't HAVE to order ones.

That would require initiative and boat-rocking. In the ensuing Congressional investigation someone could lose their job, face prison or worse, loss of their pension. It's best not to think outside the box in DC. Monsters lurk outside the box.

I had a similar idea for eliminating the cent; the mint stops making them in large numbers (possibly just enough for mint sets) and the Fed adjusts to the shortage. Maybe I had my chicken and egg reversed, but either entity could manipulate the situation if Congress has not set quotas.

Ah, but this is where a well-proven government tactic becomes useful... Are you familiar with the patsy?

Agree with all who feel the only way to successfully circulate the 'coin' is to eliminate the 'paper'. Now, if we could only get more of those halves to circulate, although then the silver ones would be much harder to come by.

I fear that the only way the Half Dollar will circulate again is if we get rid of the Quarter!
