David, I have quite a few 1971 S's and none look like this one. All the rest are without a doubt ODV-027's.

Hmm an ODV transitional would be odd. RDV varaties have always been popular but I have no recall of ODV variaties

There were two that year but the 1971 S ODV-028 paired with the RDV-002 is a pretty rare cent and if the ODV-028 is paired with the RDV-008 it's a very rare cent. I do know it's the RDV-002 but not really that sure how to spot the strengthened steps.

No, the ODV-028 was also used on the business strike. If this cent is what I believe it to be then it's a pretty rare cent.
