I wish the Mint had released a statement so we could finally put this question to rest but its probably going to be one of those things that is questioned for years to come Report this Post to the Staff

What a disappointing effort at what could have been one of the Mint's greatest achievements ever. Fewer than a dozen decent designs and only three that are really nice. The rest are amateurish at best. Now on to the county seat cent set - or was that the nuclear power plant platinum plated nickels? hoo-ray. The Mint should just listen to the public and go back to real designs on the coins, get rid of the presidents, and start minting coins with some design quality. Get rid of all the special designs, cause none of them are special any more. Report this Post to the Staff

They claim it was a random accident, and hey only addressed one of the two varieties and have never made any comment on the second variety. But if you read their story carefully, all it really boils down to is the press operator noticed a problem with the die, shut down the press, notified his supervisor, and went to lunch. When he came back the press was running again and it still had the error. Many people have assumed from that description that the press ran for the entire hour and a half the press operator was at lunch, but there is NO evidence that it did. All we know is that it was running when he got back. It could have been running ninety minutes or they could have started it just before he walked in. There is no way from their press release to have any idea how it happened or how many were made, and they never speculate as to what caused the damage. So in short the Mints official final word on the subject says nothing. Report this Post to the Staff
