I've had these wooden dollars in their custom envelopes for 20+ years, but don't remember where or how I acquired them.
Nice group!

Does anyone know why they were issued (if there even was a reason) or by whom? Maybe September 11th related?

Here's a wooden flat from Cass Scenic Railroad, located in Cass, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, which was good for a dollar back in 1970. It features an image of the "Iron Horse" Shay-powered engine.
It measures 62x100mm.

I'd imagine the amount of this discount dates this to an era when used car prices were a whole lot lower than nowadays....

These wooden nickels were created by the daughter of the editor of the PATCO Journal. Laser-engraved balsa wood to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Area Token Collectors Organization (PATCO) in 2024. The club was formed in Pittsburgh in 1984 and is still centered in the Pittsburgh area. A total of 32 flats were created (not including six initial pieces that inadvertently had a lower case "i" in the word ANNIVERSARY). They measure 62x99 mm.

During last week's U.S. 40 National Road annual yard sale, I found an interesting group of large wooden nickels (50mm) with inspirational quotes at an antique mall in Cambridge City, Indiana.

While the modern Spangenberg Gun Shop in Tombstone really doesn't have any connection with the original, I still like this wooden nickel.

On October 26, 1881, Ike Clanton went into Spangenberg's wanting to obtain a gun. The owner, George Spangenberg, aware of Ike's threats against and brushes with the Earps that morning, wisely declined to "heel" him. Thus Ike was unarmed when the shooting started later on, and so survived.

From Tombstone AZ, I'm going to take this thread all the way North and East to Dover-Foxcroft ME for the Whoopie Pie Festival. Each wooden nickel could be traded in for a sample of this official state treat for the State of Maine.
