I have definitely had coins look great in hand and then the loupe reveals the truth. But I have had the opposite as well. For instance, a seemingly boring average coin will be revealed to have amazing die polishing lines (which I like a lot).

And the closer you look the rougher they look. The RDV-005 is the normal reverse for this year. The 1988-D or plain RDV-006 is the keepers. But you know what the differences is.
