It isn't yet narrowed down to being specifically French. It could be from other majority French-speaking countries. I am thinking that composition will play a roll.

We need to develop an algorithm to identify any item in 20 questions. That should be good for 1 million possibilities.

Ok well, I kinda like the messiness of this thread, where some folks are shooting from the hip a bit while others are trying to be more disciplined in their guessing. We need the country, year and denomination. My money is on us dealing with a coin from France because of how I asked my question, but certainly this could be wrong. Knowing the alloy could help us narrow things down.

My question, was the coin minted before 1920?

Yes, it was minted before 1920.

1. Not Spanish.
2. Not German Speaking: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Belgium, and Italy.
3. French speaking: France, Monaco, Luxembourg, et al.
4. Prior to 1920

can't we narrow down the date by figuring out what it's made of?

I would propose that someone asks if it is made of base metal.

Should we ask about base metals first...or, I think I have a better idea. My proposed question is, was it minted during a war or conflict of its country of origin? What do y'all think of that?

I'm with Spence on it being French. That said Redifin, when have the French not been at war with someone? Good thinking, maybe word it another way.

How about something like...was electricity invented when this coin was minted...........to narrow down the date. Think outside of coins for the timeline maybe?

Wars paired with composition is a potent combo though...

EDIT: regardless, we got to figure out if it's made of base metal (copper, tin, bronze, nickel) or precious (gold/silver).

Seems to me that the current gamemaster is probably too cheap to buy silver or gold. So we can assume it is base metal (for now).

He wouldn't use a coin minted in this century, he likes history too much. In fact I'm thinking it's probably from the 19th century.

But I'm not asking any questions yet.
