From wikipedia:

Quote:
French historians traditionally date the Enlightenment from 1715 to 1789, from the beginning of the reign of Louis XV until the French Revolution. Most end it with the turn of the 19th century.

Perhaps an Easter egg that this coin comes from France since we were told "This coin is from Post-Enlightenment Western Europe."

Also, we can roughly bookend the date between 1800 and 1920, so I will ask:

Was this coin minted after AD 1860?

This is tough because we can't ask if the face value is more/less than say 49 cents.

If we ask something like "is the face value more than 1 franc" and the country of issue did not use francs, how would the grand-master of ceremonies answer. So I think someone needs to ask if it was made in France.

Is it from a country where, according to wikipedia, French is the official language? ... this would additionally include France, Monaco, and Luxembourg.

According to Wikipedia:

"Strictly speaking, there is no official language in Luxembourg. No language is mentioned in the Constitution; other laws only speak about Luxembourgish as "national language" and French and German as "administrative languages"."

Now, I'm going to assume the gamemeister is aware of this, which means Luxembourg is out.

Things we absolutely have to know:
Country
Denomination
Date

We really don't have to know what the metal is unless the issuer made a denomination in two metals. Similar to US 3 cent pieces or dollar coins.

So lets figure out those 3 things and see if there are two metal types. Of course, once we figure those 3 out the game will be over.

I've dropped the currently irrelevant items.
...
4. Prior to 1920
5. No hole in the coin.
6. After 1860
7. Minted in France.

You guys are honing in quickly. I think I should not have narrowed it down so much.

I like your question @jc.

I'll keep working on the date. (1920-1860)/2 = 1890

Was this coin minted after AD 1890?

I find 35 different types of French coins minted in France between the years 1861-1890 inclusive.

19 of those do not have the letters CENT in order on them.

10 of those 19 are silver.

9 of those 19 are gold.

None of them are base metal.

All of them are some denomination of Franc, as follows:

1 Franc silver only

2 Francs silver only

5 Francs both silver and gold

10 Francs gold only

20 Francs gold only

50 Francs gold only

100 Francs gold only

I did see that in 1894 the Paris mint made 1 and 2 Franc coins for Switzerland, but I think we can rule those out.
