Thank you, Dearborn and Errers! Now I've got my sights set on a monneron like 1c5d7n5m's.

Quote: Stuff and Money in the Time of the French Revolution, by Rebecca L. Spang Book arrived! Haven't started reading yet, but it was fun to see that the cover illustration shows a "country dweller" handing over his assignats to a money changer, and the assignats in question are 400 livres assignats, which I have in my collection. Simplified in the illustration, but still, the same. The 400 livres assignat is from 1792/1793, or "the first year of the republic" as stated on the note, the republic having been proclaimed 22 Sept 1792.

Here is an early assignat, from the last year of the constitutional monarchy (the republic was proclaimed Sept 22 the same year). Like for the coins from the same time, the king gets to adorn the note. The signature is printed but the serial number is handwritten (a numbering machine was constructed and used for later assignats). Assignat 50 livres, 1792. The reverse is blank. The assignat has a nice dry stamp, showing the king in relief: Edit: To read more about this assignat and the background of the assignats in general, I made a post in another thread: http://goccf.com/t/58789&whichpage=209#4096605
