While we're waiting, a drop or ring test on a war nic is probably the least reliable when determining metal content.

They dont contain enough silver to tell one way or another. In addition, planchets used in this transition are notorious

for flaws, with hidden internal abnormalities, making a ring test mute.

As suggested, the taste test is not so far-fetched. My father, one of the original hard core hoarders of '63-'66,

could tell the difference, while blindfolded, between a '42 Ty1 & Ty2. It was quite the comical sight, to us kids.

He'd roll one around his mouth, giving it the occasional sniff, as if it were a fine wine. Go figure.
Rest in Peace

I also have a 1942 nickel no mint mark.
any comments on that would be help.

OK Can anyone suggest a good nickel thread for coin roll hunters?

In 1942 Philadelphia made five cent pieces of coppernickel that had no mintmark, and 35% silver five centpieces witha large P mintmark. There were several months between the end of the coppernickel coins and when they started making the silver ones.

Thanks. So, if you're not a Facebook member (I'm certainly not), you can't see the pics?
