1795 Flowing Hair 3 Leaf - Question About Die Breaks

rum_n_cola Valued Member United States 175 Posts	Posted 08/15/2019 2:27 pm I am new to these and seem to find they have die breaks. This one below is graded PCGS F12. My question, was it graded lower due to the die breaks or is this accepted and not a detractor when grading? moxking Rest in Peace United States 17900 Posts	Posted 08/15/2019 6:10 pm Mint made die problems are not considered in numerical circulation grade assignments, but they are considered for eye appeal. The value of a Coin is a combination of numerical grade and eye appeal. Eye appeal can increase or decrease the value. What look like scratches on the obverse are probably planchet weight reductions. This is not a high end 15. The eye appeal, even for this early issue, would be no more than 4/10 by my own estimates. Report this Post to the Staff

Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6398 Posts	Posted 08/16/2019 11:45 pm The parallel grooves on the obverse look like unusually heavy adjustment marks. They won't affect the technical grade but do impact eye appeal. I'd like to get a flowing hair dollar for my type set but wouldn't be tempted by this one. There are many nicer examples on the market.
