@Phil310 .... Yes, the star/MY could be a merchant token. I've checked a great many contemporary sources over the years, books, directories, newspapers, periodicals, etc.; all, to no avail as yet.
The double-struck stamp shows us that the star and letters were parts of a single punch; this, as opposed to having used two or three separate punches. It appears that the striker didn't use enough force the first time.
@jbuck .... That's a most respectable specimen of the scarce 1850 year. I rarely encounter that date at shows!

Quote: There was a mining company in the eastern USA that was O&G. @ JoeCoin .... O&G stands for Oil & Gas. This company was formed in 1923. The O&G c/s's are pre-Civil War, it appears. That said, I'm always looking for a solid lead like this! Thanks for conveying the possibility.

Here's yet another one of the enigmatic counterstamps to be found on Half Cents. It's been speculated that this SPL c/s may be a railroad logo for Southern Pacific Lines. At least two dozen of these c/s's have been reported, all of which appear on 1851 Half Cents.
