Mixing things up a bit... Here's a 1938 commemorative medal from Finland marking its involvement with the 1638 settlement of New Sweden by the Swedes and Finns. Finland New Sweden Commemorative Medal For more details on the medal, check out: - 1936 (-38) Delaware Tercentenary - Finnish Cousin

Surprisingly, this is my only non-Euro coin from Finland. I don't really collect foreign coins, but have accumulated a lot over the years and I assumed I had more. I guess that's what I get for assuming... This is a 1931 S 5 markkaa coin.

You can see the determinism in those faces. The New Sweden settlement is part of our Swedish history and taught in schools and pops up in popular historical articles now and then ("we should have kept it" ), but never or rarely is there mention of the significant Finnish involvement. Here in (Old ) Sweden we tend to forget that we have more than half a millenium of common history with Finland, or "The Eastern Half of the Realm" as it was officially called when we were the same country. Thanks for the reminder .
