Can any one offer any advice on how to tell if a maravedis coin is real? Like what to look for on the coin... please and thank you. I don't currently have anything to show I just wanna see if they are legit.

Maravedis were striked during 7 centuries, from medieval to late modern times... as you can guess, it is not easy to give you a general advice of what to look for :(. Could you be a little more specific?

Regards!

Just wanted to know if there are any easy ways of telling if they are fake or not. Like being magnetic for example.

Well, I don't think they made magnetic maravedis, so if you somehow find a magnetic one, it's likely to be a bad fake.

But IIRC most maravedis issues are too common to be faked much.

General things to look for fairly easily could include wrong diameter, wrong weight, wrong manufacturing method, and wrong alloy. Also, consider the source of your coin purchases. Of course even the best sellers sometimes make mistakes, but you should avoid sellers of multiple fakes.

Down the road, consider posting some of your purchases here on CCF and perhaps we can help you.

I'm agree with january and spence, but with some clarification:

- There is A LOT of fakes maravedis. but almost all of them are not modern copies, they were very counterfeited coins in the years that they were in circulation. Of course, neither copper or silver are magnetic, you can automatically discard any magnetic coin.
- Spence advice can be resumed in that way: Studying before buying.

You can use this website -> https://maravedis.net , or even better, try to get a specialized catalogue. Best options are Jarabo-Sanahuja https://www.ebay.es/itm/EL-VELLON-D...264183360049 or Lopez de la Fuente https://www.ebay.es/itm/LOS-MARAVED...223345424426 https://www.ebay.es/itm/libro-LOS-M...223483685226 . Maravedis were striked on a very neglicted way, their weights and diameters could vary a lot even on same series. Look at that:

- https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5835040 -> 2.73g
- https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5824940 -> 1.79g

They are mine. Same year, same mint, but almost a 50% of weight difference between them... and they are not fakes.

Regards!
