There aren't many castles depicted on coins of the classic US commemorative series, but the three coins issued in 1936 to mark the transition of the US Territory of the Philippines to the US Commonwealth of the Philippines in November 1935 quality. Each has a castle within its Coat-of-Arms which is symbolic of the Philippine Islands' time under the jurisdiction of Spain; the Coat is seen on the reverse of each coin. This particular Coat-of-Arms was replaced in 1946 when the Philippines became a fully-independent sovereign nation.

The obverse of each of the coins depicts two portraits; one representing the US, the other the Philippines - Manuel Quezon was the first President of the Philippines Commonwealth. Frank Murphy was the last US Governor-General of the Philippines Territory and Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the US President at the time of the PI transition.
